With CMEC as General Contractor, the project consists of a coal-fired power plant, a coal wharf, supporting facilities, power transmission lines and related substations. 

The project won: 

IPMA Outstanding Project Management Award 

An aerial view of the power plant is printed on the front side of the new 100-rupee bank note issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, becoming a symbol of prosperity and development.
